To the delight of many die-hard boot hockey fans, an anonymous ESSPBHL (East Side of St. Paul Boot Hockey League, a BHPA subsidiary) player has branded Minnesota as “The State of Boot Hockey”. The player wished to remain anonymous due to a pending lawsuit with The Brass Buckle over a pull tab dispute, stating “they [the Brass Buckle] don’t need to know nothin’ about this, ’cause if I get money from this idea they might use that against me in court”. As the mystery player tells it, the idea for Minnesota’s new nickname came about at halftime of a preseason game behind Arlington High School. “One guy comes up to me and says we should call St Paul ‘the city of boot hockey’, but then I was like ‘hey, I know guys in Coon Rapids and Blaine and White Bear that love boot hockey, so why would we just say St. Paul?’ Then it was like ‘click’ in my head: Minnesota really is the State of Boot Hockey'”.
While the player will reveal his name once his legal dispute with The Brass Buckle is over or “when I get a ton of money for this State of Boot Hockey idea…like, enough for a new Mustang and for my kid to go to high school at Hill Murray”, whichever comes first, this hasn’t stopped production of “The State of Boot Hockey” coffee mugs, car flags, pens, t-shirts, and can coozies at local screen printing shops. Dan Drivshaw of Payne Screening commented that the new merchandise “flies off the shelves. As soon as we get some of that stuff in, it’s gone in like two hours. I hear that they’re gonna start making jackets soon, and as long as they’re not too spendy those should be a big hit”. When asked on where the designs came from and who, if anyone, is profiting off of the merchandise, Drivshaw referred BHD to the law offices of Schwebel, Goetz, and Sieben for comment. It is worth noting that the law firm is currently representing Boot Hockey Hall of Famer Ace Chicago in what Ken Sieben would only refer to as “a gambling dispute in St. Paul.
BHD also contacted the Minnesota Wild for comment as this new nickname is very close to their own “The State of Hockey” marketing campaign. Wild representatives repeatedly asked for information regarding players in the ESSPBHL and BHPA, not for any trademark infringement purposes but to try to, in their words, “find players who can score more than 30 goals in a season”.
